Box-Only Ordering Explained: Why Wholesale Footwear Sells by the Case

New wholesale buyers occasionally ask why they can't simply order six pairs of one size instead of a full case. The answer is rooted in how footwear is actually produced, not an arbitrary supplier policy.

Footwear is manufactured and packed in size-run batches

A footwear factory produces a style across its full size curve in a single production run, then packs that run into pre-set boxes spanning a fixed size ratio. Breaking that ratio apart to sell individual sizes requires repacking at the supplier's cost and adds handling complexity that doesn't scale.

The box ratio reflects real population sell-through data

A well-designed box ratio isn't arbitrary — it mirrors the actual distribution of foot sizes in the population the style is sold into. A retailer selling a full box is, in effect, buying a small proportional slice of the whole size curve, which is closer to how the style will actually sell across their customer base than a hand-picked handful of sizes would be.

It keeps wholesale pricing lower for everyone

Case-level packing and shipping is dramatically more efficient than pick-and-pack at the individual pair level. That efficiency is a meaningful part of why wholesale pricing can sit well below single-pair retail cost — unbundling it would raise costs across the board, not just for buyers who want smaller quantities.

How to plan around it as a buyer

Rather than fighting the box structure, use it: choose the box size (8, 10, or 12 pairs) that best matches your store's typical size curve for that category, and lean on an order-wide minimum rather than a per-style one to mix styles and colorways flexibly across a single order.
