The Complete Guide to Buying Wholesale Leather Footwear

Buying footwear at wholesale is structurally different from buying almost anything else for a retail floor — the unit of sale usually isn't a pair, it's a case. If you're new to wholesale leather footwear specifically, here's the full picture.

The case, not the pair, is the ordering unit

Most wholesale leather footwear ships in fixed pre-pack boxes — commonly 8, 10 or 12 pairs — spread across a set size run. The supplier normally assigns one box format per style rather than letting you pick: at Hector Footwear, a style ships either in an 8-pair box running EU 40–44 or a 10-pair box running EU 40–45, and the product page says which. You are buying a slice of the size curve, not an individual size.

Understand payment terms before you shop

Wholesale pricing is rarely one number. Expect a spread between prepay, net-30, and net-60 terms, with prepay typically carrying the deepest discount in exchange for the supplier not carrying receivables risk. Match the terms you select to your actual cash position — a discount isn't a discount if it strains working capital.

Materials determine both price and durability

Full-grain leather costs more than corrected-grain or bonded leather because it uses the entire natural hide surface, including its imperfections, rather than sanding and refinishing a lower layer. For a retail buyer, that translates directly into how the product performs after a season of wear — and how few returns you'll field.

Minimum orders are usually order-wide, not per-style

Rather than a minimum per individual style, many modern wholesale platforms set a single order-wide minimum (Hector Footwear's is 40 pairs total), letting you mix styles, colorways, and box sizes freely to reach it. This is friendlier to smaller or newer accounts than a rigid per-style minimum.

Ask about pre-book versus at-once availability

"Available now" styles typically ship within about a week of confirmation; "pre-book" styles are ordered ahead of a future production run with a stated ship window. Plan your open-to-buy calendar around both.

Build the relationship, not just the order

A dedicated territory rep, a real order-status history, and transparent inventory are what separate a wholesale partner from a transactional vendor. Ask any prospective supplier how they handle exactly those three things before you commit.
